Embracing Community at Unbound Gravel: The Dirt Squad Experience

Hey, friends! If you're a gravel enthusiast like me, you know that events like Unbound Gravel are more than just races—they’re adventures that help us find new limits and reveal our true selves. This year, as part of the Dirt Squad, I experienced firsthand how community transformed the event into something extraordinary.

The Heartbeat of the Dirt Squad: Our Team House

Nestled in Emporia, the Dirt Squad team house became our home base. It was more than just a place to crash; it was where stories of past races were shared, strategies discussed, and friendships strengthened. The camaraderie that flourished within those walls fueled our spirits and set the tone for our entire Unbound Gravel experience.

Dining with a Pro: A Meal to Remember

One of the highlights of our journey was sharing dinner with a seasoned pro cyclist  Amanda Nauman and our team. It wasn’t just about good food (though Johns BBQ skills were next level!)—it was about soaking in wisdom, sharing laughs, and building connections. Amanda's stories and insights were invaluable, yet it was the sense of unity that truly elevated the evening. We were not just a team but a family, ready to support each other on course the following day.

Riding with Heart and Soul

From the first pedal stroke to the last, riding alongside my Dirt Squad teammates pushed me to new heights. There’s something magical about cycling with people who share the same passion and drive. Together, we faced the course, from grueling climbs to unexpected mechanicals. Watching each of us discover new limits and celebrate small victories was nothing short of inspiring. Mary you will always inspire me to be a better person!

The Spirit of Teamwork on Hot Dog Hill

Hot Dog Hill—mention it to any Unbound participant, and you’ll see a knowing smile or a wince. This notorious climb is the final kick in the pants before the finish. But with the Dirt Squad, it became a symbol of our collective strength. As we watched riders tackle the hill, we supported each other, literally pushing teammates up the incline. The expressions on the faces of fellow athletes who witnessed our camaraderie were priceless. They reminded us why we ride: for each other.

Crossing the Finish Line Together

The finish line at Unbound Gravel is both an end and a beginning. It’s where exhaustion meets euphoria. Our team spirit was palpable as we cheered every member across the line. Those moments of lifting each other up, sharing exhausted smiles and triumphant hugs, encapsulated the essence of the Dirt Squad. We were more than a team; we were a testament to the power of community.

We came together as a team to welcome Lissa back to Emporia at 3:45 AM.  With no fanfare, and no lights we gathered to hug her and make her finish memorable! That is what team spirit is all about!

Why Community Matters

The community is what transformed Unbound Gravel from just another race to an unforgettable experience. It wasn’t about who crossed the finish line first but about the journey we shared. A supportive community empowers us to push through boundaries and achieve dreams. It amplifies joy and lessens burdens, turning an individual sport into a collective celebration.

In closing, I’m grateful for the Dirt Squad and everyone who shared in this incredible event. Together, we proved that cycling’s true power lies in the connections we forge and the lives we touch. Here’s to chasing more dreams and creating new memories, always with community at the heart of the ride.

Ride on, and see you at the next adventure! 🚴♀️✨

Warm regards, Crystal
